The task seems insurmountable. An aging loved one can no longer live independently, and the time has come to make a change, seek assisted living and pack a lifetime of memories into boxes. Unfortunately, it’s a change people make every day in western Pennsylvania.
Nearly 25 percent of Pennsylvanians are over age 55. On a daily basis, they are challenged to make life-changing decisions for themselves or on behalf of family members facing late-life challenges. In many circumstances, these decisions must be made quickly and without time to research all options.
Enter Life Service Providers Inc. (LSP), established as a candle in the window when the going gets tough for families facing change. The free information and referral service brings together in one location a network of providers so families can channel time they would have spent searching for support for aging loved ones.
“We really believe in our one-stop-shop concept,” says Manette Sykes, LSP marketing director. “A difficult time does not need to be made any worse by endless searching.”
The network was launched about five years ago to fill the void of reference information available to consumers faced with tough decisions about senior living. The web-based operation researches and profiles services in the greater Pittsburgh area that meet the needs of older adults. In just a few clicks, information can be requested about multiple-service providers in 14 different categories.
LSP is tailored for adults who are caring for their parents while also raising their own children -- adults who, cornered by tightening schedules and increasing responsibilities, do not have ample time to research care providers and facilities.
“LSP researches and recommends established agencies, businesses and facilities ranging from banks to long-term care providers. Only two to three service providers are accepted in each category. Each agency is screened and must be recommended by one of LSP’s board members before a family will be sent their way.
“If a consumer wants to and is able to stay at home, we can help them find services to make that possible,” says Sykes. “But if a move to assisted living or long-term care is necessary, we have members who will assist with the selling of the home and the downsizing and moving process.”
LSP also lists independent, assisted and skilled nursing facilities and offers a supporting cast of real estate agents, lawyers, health care professionals, move managers, financial professionals and emergency responders who specialize in the specific needs of seniors.
Agency profiles and contact information are available in a single web forum at www.lifeserviceproviders.com.
“We are a group of professionals devoted to helping families fulfill their needs, whatever they are,” says Sandy Goldstein, LSP board member.
“We can address the sensitive social service issues that face the sandwich generation. Maybe it’s a nurse or someone to do this or that around the house,” says Sykes. “No matter the need, we get people connected to services.”
